Testicular Ultrasound

Introduction

Testicular ultrasound is a crucial diagnostic tool for men’s health, examining both testicles, epididymis, and scrotal contents. This gentle, non-invasive scan helps diagnose testicular lumps, varicoceles, hydroceles, epididymitis, and other scrotal conditions. Early detection is vital for testicular health.

Our consultant radiologists provide a comfortable, professional environment with complete privacy. The scan takes 15-20 minutes and results are explained.

Common reasons include finding a lump, scrotal pain, swelling, trauma, or fertility concerns. We serve men throughout Essex.

Complete Examination Includes:

  • Both testicles detailed examination
  • Size and structure assessment (volume, texture, echogenicity)
  • Epididymis evaluation (head, body, tail)
  • Presence of fluid (hydrocele)
  • Varicocele detection and grading
  • Blood flow assessment using Colour Doppler
  • Inguinal region check
  • Detailed report with measurements

Symptoms Requiring Scan:

  • Painless lump or hard area in testicle
  • Testicular pain (acute or chronic)
  • Swelling of the scrotum
  • Trauma to the testicles
  • Sudden severe testicular pain (possible torsion)
  • Change in testicle size or shape
  • Heaviness or dragging sensation
  • Infertility concerns

Conditions We Detect:

  • Testicular tumours (germ cell, non-germ cell)
  • Varicocele (enlarged veins in scrotum)
  • Hydrocele (fluid collection around testicle)
  • Epididymal cysts
  • Epididymitis/Orchitis (infection or inflammation)
  • Testicular torsion (twisted testicle – emergency!)
  • Spermatocele (sperm-filled cyst)
  • Inguinal hernia
  • Testicular microlithiasis

Why Ultrasound is Essential:

  • Cannot determine lump nature by examination alone
  • Most testicular lumps need imaging for diagnosis
  • Early cancer detection significantly improves outcomes
  • Non-invasive and completely safe
  • More accurate than physical examination alone

Important Health Information:

  • All men should perform monthly testicular self-examination
  • Any lump requires urgent ultrasound assessment
  • Testicular cancer is most common cancer in men aged 15-35
  • Early detection has >95% cure rate
  • Don’t delay if you notice any changes

No Preparation Required:

  • No fasting needed
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Shower before appointment
  • Bring any previous scan results
